After a slow and uncertain May, June brought a strong comeback in hiring activity, making it the best-performing month of the current financial year. The number of active job openings in June 2021 was more than double that of June 2020. While June last year marked the lowest point in hiring during the pandemic, this year’s June showed clear signs of recovery and renewed momentum. With the second wave of COVID-19 easing and vaccination efforts gaining pace, June 2021 set the stage for a brighter employment trend, reflecting a positive shift in the overall Jobs Outlook Report for the months ahead.

The unlocking of major markets and the resumption of commercial activities boosted hiring action to a massive 32% increase over May 2021. The count of jobs that were active, refreshed, and seen accepting applicants in June 2021 was 270K as against 205K in May 2021 and 200K in April 2021.

Job Types

June saw a strong rebound in full-time hiring, with openings rising by 33% compared to May. Full-time roles made up 93% of all active job opportunities during the month. While contract roles stayed largely unchanged, part-time jobs saw a 25% increase. Internship openings also grew by over 20%, highlighting a renewed focus on early-career talent and flexible work models.

Jobs by Levels

There was a slight shift in the distribution of job openings across different experience levels compared to May. Entry-level roles accounted for 33% of active openings, showing a minor dip of 1%. Mid-junior roles rose to 27%, up by 2%. Meanwhile, mid-senior roles made up 21%, reflecting a 2% decline. Senior-level positions remained steady, contributing just over 1% of total job openings.

Jobs by Industries

In June 2021, the IT Services sector led the job growth with a significant 37% increase in active openings compared to May. Following closely behind, the Internet-Enabled Services sector saw a 32% rise in job opportunities. After a period of stagnation, the BFSI sector bounced back, posting a 26% increase in job openings over May 2021.

Jobs by Functions

IT remains the dominant sector in active job openings, contributing 48% of the total, followed by Engineering at 24%. The Sales & Business Development functions saw a notable increase in job opportunities compared to May, signaling a strong demand in this area. As a result, more hiring activity is anticipated in Sales & BD roles in the upcoming quarter.

Jobs by Location

Metro cities witnessed a strong surge in hiring, with over 125,000 active job openings in June—the highest since the pandemic began. Among them, Bengaluru led the way with a sharp 66% rise in job postings compared to May. It was followed by Mumbai with a 22% increase, Delhi at 21%, Hyderabad with 20%, and Chennai showing a steady 9% growth.

Several top companies actively expanded their workforce in June. Noteworthy employers included:
