The E Factor: Journey from CXO to CEO Office

In an increasingly crowded CXO landscape, especially over the last decade, we’ve seen many highly successful executives come close to reaching their ultimate goals only to fall just short. What holds them back at that final stretch? Often, it boils down to their functional background. A significant share of top positions tends to go to leaders from Sales or Operations. But even within that elite group, not everyone makes it across the line. So, what makes the last leap so elusive?

At that stage, the ambition isn’t passive; it’s something lived and breathed every day. It becomes a pursuit that consumes thought, time, and identity. And yet, for some, despite the relentless effort, the summit remains just out of reach. Sometimes, it’s just one or two missing attributes, something subtle but crucial. The question is: can those be discovered and course-corrected this late in the game? Possibly. However, the truth is that it’s hard. Very hard. When you’re so close, yet still not there, the gap feels less like a chasm and more like a mirror. And what it reflects can be the toughest part of the journey.

So, where’s the CEO School? What’s the syllabus?

It’s right here, and the schooling is happening right now every minute. In my opinion, the journey from the ‘CXO’ to the ‘CEO’ is not covered in the last lap but through our careers and lives each day. What plays a role in the final leg is the seeds that were actually sown long ago. And it takes time to get nourished each year, each quarter, every month. It develops and becomes stronger. And shows up in that moment of choice. Let’s talk about these ‘Executive’ factors!

Keeping a host of sub-factors of technical expertise (which is abundant in supply) aside, when I mentally summarize the Queen / King making attributes, the following distinguishing factors run through my mind as some of the top choices from a supposedly long list and I would like to share these thoughts with you. We may note that the absence or deficiency of these might become the eventual constraining features for otherwise accomplished performers in their respective domains but are seldom deliberated.

The Bigger Picture

Having an eye for detail is a gift, but knowing when to look beyond the details is what really sets great leaders apart. These leaders naturally build trust and inspire confidence in those around them. As a result, their name becomes the go-to choice without anyone needing to say it out loud. What stands out most is their unstoppable enthusiasm to help others see the bigger picture and guide everyone on the journey from small beginnings to something much greater, like turning a brick into a palace.

Mastering Calm Decision-Making: The Power of Expertise and the ‘E Trait

The immediate benefit of great expertise is the ability to clearly see what’s right and what’s wrong, making it easy to make decisions. However, there’s a trait—let’s call it the “E trait” that often steps in and helps avoid making quick judgments. No matter how tough, confusing, or demanding a situation may seem, the ability to solve problems without getting upset or rattled shows a different kind of strength. This calm, steady approach builds credibility over time, earning respect and trust, even if it isn’t always recognized in the moment. Every small win adds up, quietly strengthening the leader’s position.

Embracing Authenticity: The Path to Originality and Self-Expression

The holders of the “E trait” don’t rely on borrowed ideas or mimic others’ actions. It’s a bold claim, but true. This is why they never run out of thoughts, ideas, or ways to express themselves. By simply living authentically each day, they become living history, and their words turn into timeless quotes and sources of inspiration. So, how can I learn originality? The truth is, you can’t “learn” originality; you can only be your true, undiluted self and express that without filters. It’s like creating art one small stroke at a time. Over time, the masterpiece will take shape, just like a dot painting gradually coming together.

The Irresistible E Factor: Presence, Not Just Brilliance

This is the visible side of the E factor, the part you can’t miss. It stands out effortlessly when the moment calls for it. Like Rome, it isn’t built in a day but rather shaped slowly, year after year, through the lived experience of a career. It’s not always about brilliance. In fact, you’ve probably seen brilliance lose out to this quiet force. Decisions may seem unfair, but the presence of the E factor often tips the scale.

While some believe leaders are born, gifted with a certain DNA, I lean toward something more grounded: it’s all about the basics. These timeless traits don’t go out of style. There’s no shortcut to the corner office. The path is straightforward, but it demands consistency.
